> 📖 **[Installation Guide](INSTALL.md)** — quick start, manual setup, and troubleshooting
**Last Updated:** 2025-12-27
**Status:** Production Ready | SOTA Compliant | Fully Operational
**Version:** 2.0.1 (Phase 1-5 Complete + Schema Migration)
A comprehensive Vienna public transport application with **two complementary interfaces**:
- ** Web Application**: Interactive real-time map with departure information
- ** MCP Server**: AI assistant integration for Claude Desktop (SOTA compliant)
**Important Note**: Due to Wiener Linien API limitations, the map shows **departure events at stops** rather than real-time GPS vehicle positions. This is the real-time information available from the official API.
Both interfaces share the same backend logic and data sources, providing a unified experience across web and AI platforms.
---

## Installation
### Prerequisites
- [uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/) installed (RECOMMENDED)
- Python 3.12+
### Quick Start
Run immediately via `uvx`:
```bash
uvx vienna-transit-mcp
```
### Claude Desktop Integration
Add to your `claude_desktop_config.json`:
```json
"mcpServers": {
"vienna-transit-mcp": {
"command": "uv",
"args": ["--directory", "D:/Dev/repos/mywienerlinien", "run", "vienna-transit-mcp"]
}
}
```
### Prerequisites
- Python 3.9 or higher
- Docker & Docker Compose
- PostgreSQL 16+ with PostGIS (via Docker)
### Quick Install
```powershell
# Clone repository
git clone https://github.com/yourusername/mywienerlinien.git
cd mywienerlinien
# Start with Docker (recommended)
docker compose up -d
# Or install for native development
pip install -e .
```
---
## Usage
### 1. Docker (Production + Development)
```powershell
# Start all services
docker compose up -d
# View logs
docker compose logs -f frontend
# Restart after code changes (fast rebuild - 10 seconds)
docker compose restart frontend
# Stop all services
docker compose down
```
**Hot-Reload Enabled!** Edit Python/HTML/CSS files Changes appear in 1 second!
### 2. Native Development (Fastest)
```powershell
# Run frontend directly (connects to Docker DB)
.\run_dev.ps1
# Frontend runs on http://localhost:3080
# Instant reload on file changes!
```
See `DOCKER_DEV_GUIDE.md` for comprehensive development workflow.
### 3. MCP Server (Claude Desktop / Cursor IDE - Native Execution)
**Important:**
- MCP server runs natively (NOT in Docker)
- Entry point: `frontend.mcp_server.server` (module execution)
- Connects to Docker database on `localhost:5433`
**Why Native:** MCP uses stdio transport which requires direct process communication. Docker stdio plumbing is complex and fragile. Native execution is simpler.
#### For Cursor IDE
**Important:** Cursor uses system Python. Install dependencies in the Python that Cursor uses:
```powershell
# Find system Python path (check Cursor error logs if needed)
# Example: C:\Users\sandr\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python310\python.exe
python -m pip install -e .
```
See `CURSOR_SETUP.md` for detailed Cursor configuration instructions.
#### For Claude Desktop
Add to `claude_desktop_config.json`:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"vienna-transit": {
"command": "python",
"args": ["-m", "frontend.mcp_server.server"],
"env": {
"PYTHONPATH": "D:/Dev/repos/mywienerlinien",
"PYTHONUNBUFFERED": "1",
"DATABASE_URL": "postgresql://wienerlinien:wienerlinien@localhost:5433/wienerlinien"
}
}
}
}
```
**Note:** Some JSON linters object to `cwd` parameter. Using `-m` module execution with `PYTHONPATH` avoids this issue.

## Docker Development Tips
### Hot-Reload (Zero Rebuild!)
```powershell
# Edit any .py/.html/.css file
# Changes appear in 1 second! No rebuild needed!
```
### Regular Rebuilds (10 seconds)
```powershell
# For Python code changes
docker compose restart frontend # Fast! Uses cache!
```
### Full Rebuild (ONLY for dependency changes!)
```powershell
# ONLY when requirements.txt changes!
docker compose down
docker compose build frontend
docker compose up -d
```
** NEVER use `--no-cache` for code changes!** (Wastes 15+ minutes)
See `DOCKER_DEV_GUIDE.md` and `DOCKER_GUIDE_COMPLETE.html` for details.

# Test import
python test_mcp.py
# Run with database
$env:DATABASE_URL = "postgresql://wienerlinien:wienerlinien@localhost:5433/wienerlinien"
python -m frontend.mcp_server.server
```
See `docs/MCP_TESTING_GUIDE.md` for comprehensive test scenarios.
### Web Application Testing
## 🛡️ Industrial Quality Stack
This project adheres to **SOTA 14.1** industrial standards for high-fidelity agentic orchestration:
- **Python (Core)**: [Ruff](https://astral.sh/ruff) for linting and formatting. Zero-tolerance for `print` statements in core handlers (`T201`).
- **Webapp (UI)**: [Biome](https://biomejs.dev/) for sub-millisecond linting. Strict `noConsoleLog` enforcement.
- **Protocol Compliance**: Hardened `stdout/stderr` isolation to ensure crash-resistant JSON-RPC communication.
- **Automation**: [Justfile](./justfile) recipes for all fleet operations (`just lint`, `just fix`, `just dev`).
- **Security**: Automated audits via `bandit` and `safety`.
