# CORE for Cowork — Max Plugin
**Delivery intelligence for your Cowork projects.** CORE gives you a persistent Delivery Manager (DM) who remembers your project across sessions, runs adversarial reasoning swarms on hard problems, and surfaces risks before they become blockers — all inside Cowork.
The max plugin is the full Cowork-native experience: Live Artifact dashboards, scheduled sessions, connector-aware project setup, and a DM Workshop where your DM has a persistent visual presence.

## Install
Three channels — pick whichever fits your setup:

## First session
1. **Open any Cowork session** in the folder you want to manage with CORE.
2. **Your DM introduces themselves** and opens a three-minute setup wizard. Answer a few questions — what kind of project, who's involved, which connectors you use.
3. **The wizard creates your project's `PROJECT.md`** — the single source of truth for project state, risks, and priorities.
4. **Quit Cowork (Cmd+Q) and reopen.** This activates the CORE MCP server so the live dashboard can read real-time project state.
5. **From here, every session opens with your dashboard** showing project health, active risks, and the DM's session agenda.
No manual configuration. No files to edit. The DM handles everything.

## Connectors
The max plugin works with any subset of connectors. The more you enable, the more the DM can infer without asking:

Under the current release scope, **this is the one plugin for all Cowork users.** If additional plugin variants become available, the install matrix will expand:

## Supply chain notice
This plugin installs hooks that run on your macOS host at session start and end. Those hooks:
- Read `~/.claude/skills/` to inject the CORE skill into each session
- Write to `~/.core/` (your project state and DM memory) — gated behind a one-click `request_cowork_directory` approval each session
- On first session, register the CORE MCP server in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json` — backing up the existing config first
The CORE skill is open source at `dbatesai/core-skill`. The MCP server tools are read-only — no tool modifies external state. SHA256 checksums and an optional PGP signature accompany every release for artifact verification. CDN resources in Live Artifacts are pinned to specific commit SHAs and verified at CI time.

## Capability levels
The plugin runs at one of three capability levels, decided automatically at first install. The DM tells you which level is active in chat.

Capability is probed once at first SessionStart and persisted to `~/.core/capability.json`. To re-probe (after installing Node.js, for example), set `CORE_CAPABILITY_REPROBE=1` in your environment and start a new session.
## Requirements
- **Python 3.11+** in PATH as `python3` (required — hook scripts).
- **macOS:** ships with `python3`. If missing, install via `brew install python@3.11` or download from [python.org](https://www.python.org/downloads/).
- **Windows:** download Python 3.11+ from [python.org](https://www.python.org/downloads/) (NOT the Microsoft Store version). During install, check **Add Python to PATH** and **Install py launcher**. After install, verify with `where python3` in a new terminal.
- **Linux:** install via your package manager (`apt install python3` on Debian/Ubuntu; `dnf install python3` on Fedora).
- **Node.js 18+** in PATH as `node` (optional — unlocks Level 1 live dashboard via the CORE MCP server). If absent, plugin runs at Level 2 (file-tool fallback).
- **macOS:** `brew install node` or download from [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/).
- **Windows:** download the LTS installer from [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/). Verify with `node --version`.
- **Linux:** via package manager or [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/).
- **Cowork** (the Anthropic native-app harness this plugin targets). Plugin hooks run on the host with full filesystem privilege.
## Troubleshooting
**Dashboard not showing live state?** Quit Cowork (Cmd+Q on macOS, close and reopen on Windows) — the MCP server loads at app start, not session start. One restart after install is required.
**Wizard opened again unexpectedly?** The plugin detected no `PROJECT.md` in your current folder. Either use the wizard to set up this folder, or open Cowork in the folder where your existing project lives.
**Improvement queue over cap?** You'll see a `CORE-QUEUE-OVER-CAP` marker in the DM's first message. Review `~/.core/improvement-queue.md` manually and delete or apply entries. The default cap is 5 (set `CORE_IMPROVEMENT_QUEUE_CAP=<n>` env var to override).
**MCP registration failed?** The DM will note this and run in snapshot mode (dashboard shows last-session state, not live state). Check `~/.core/mcp-install-log.md` for the error. Set `CORE_MCP_INSTALL_MANUAL=1` to disable auto-registration and manage the config manually.
**Windows: `python3` not found?** Python 3.7+ installers from python.org create both `python` and `python3` aliases. If only `python` is available:
- Open `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/hooks/hooks.json`
- Replace `python3` with `python` in both `command` fields
- Or re-run the python.org installer with "Add Python to PATH" enabled
**Path semantics on Windows.** The plugin's Claude Desktop / Cowork config target is `%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json` (resolved automatically by `mcp_server_install.py`). The venv lives at `%USERPROFILE%\.core\mcp-venv\` with `Scripts\python.exe` as the entry. No `bin/` directory on Windows — `Scripts/` is the conventional location.
## Cross-platform notes (for plugin developers)
The plugin's hook scripts and MCP installer are pure Python (cross-platform via `pathlib`, `platform.system()`, and the `venv` module). The `hooks/hooks.json` invokes them with the explicit `python3` interpreter — the canonical pattern for cross-platform Claude Code plugins per the [community guide](https://claudefa.st/blog/tools/hooks/cross-platform-hooks) and verified against Anthropic's plugin reference.
If you fork this plugin:
- All file paths use `pathlib.Path` — no hardcoded separators
- Home directory: `Path.home()`, never `$HOME` or `%USERPROFILE%`
- Per-OS config paths: `core_helpers.claude_config_path()` branches on `platform.system()`
- Lock files: mkdir-based atomic locking (no `flock` — Linux-only)
- Skill bundling: `shutil.copytree` (no `rsync` — not on Windows)
- `.gitattributes` enforces LF line endings on `.sh`/`.py`, CRLF on `.bat`/`.cmd`
Thin `.sh` and `.cmd` shims are provided in `scripts/` for users who want explicit shell entry points, but `hooks/hooks.json` invokes the `.py` files directly — no wrapper layer.
